Outdoor Group Trek Training Details
Winter/Spring 2019 January 22nd – May 30th
1 - week break (April 15th – 19th) - Sheri’s cousin is getting married in Tulum
Where to meet for the Tuesday/Thursday 90-minute sessions:
Lower Woodland Park Playfields (5900 W Green Lake Way N Seattle, WA 98103), next to Greenlake and its mini golf course. Upon arrival you will turn into a parking lot area between the tennis courts and the track, instead of parking, take the immediate right up the hill. You will pass the dog park on your left, keep going to the top of the hilland turn left and park in that lot. I will be under one of the two shelters, basically whichever one is not in use. Both are relatively close together and you will be able to see both from where you park. If you get confused, call me: Sheri's Cell: (206) 465-1795.
Where to meet for the Wednesday morning sessions:
Each week you will receive an email from me by Monday morning. The email will list that weeks events, all training sessions, and whether there is a hike or a trekking talk that you may want to attend. I will let you know which park we will train at for the Wednesday session, directions and where exactly to meet. If there is a hike that week, you will also be informed of where the hike is and all essential details. For your planning purposes our first 5 park locations will be in this order: Carkeek Park, Richmond Beach Salt Water Park, St. Edwards State Park, Discovery Park and Golden Gardens.
Where to meet for the Bi-Monthly Hikes:
In the email that I send weekly, I will let you know where the hikes will be for that month and where and what time we will meet for the group carpool to the trail head. I will also let you know what to bring (the ten essentials are required to come on the hikes). The first month we will hike in more local locations like St. Edwards State Park and Discovery Park, as typically snow will be on many of the I-90 trails. We will work our way East as the snow begins to melt and hike on various trails off the I-90 Corridor.
What time to arrive:
15-20 minutes prior to the start time of your first session to turn in paperwork; 10 minutes early for all other sessions so you have time to warm-up your muscles with the rolling stick. We will start our warm up walk on time, so arrive early for stick rolling!
Sessions:
Tuesday Morning: 10AM-11:30AM
Wednesday Morning: 9AM-10:30AM
Thursday Morning: 8:30AM-10:00AM
3- Hour Hikes:
Friday Morning:
10AM- 1PM (1X monthly):
Feb 15th, March 15th, April 26th, May 17th
Sunday Morning:
9AM-12PM (1X monthly):
Feb 3rd, March 3rd, April 7th, May 5th
What to wear
Dress for the weather! Basically wear comfortable workout clothing. During the winter: long sleeve workout shirts (may also need a fleece or down jacket), raincoat or rain resistant workout jacket, hat or ear-warmers, gloves, long tights or hiking pants. Later Spring: lighter gear may be appropriate such as t-shirts, a light weight workout jacket, capri-type workout pants, light weight hiking pants or possibly shorts. For footwear: running shoes or trail running shoes for 90 minute sessions, and hiking boots or other trail appropriate shoe for our hikes.
What to bring:
1. Rolling Stick for warm-ups and cool downs (Look for The Stick on Amazon. I recommend the smaller sized travel stick so you can take it with you on your adventures.)
2. Water-bottle or water bladder
3. Training snack and / or Nuun Tablet to put in your water or Gatorade powder to add to your water
4. Small daypack to hold your water-bottle, valuables and layers of clothes. I use an Osprey 20-Liter Pack. This day back-pack has a hip belt for maximum comfort and support. I highly recommend that any backpack you use has a hip belt. If you are purchasing one for the first time, be sure to be properly fitted. REI does a great job of fitting you with the proper sized back-pack.
5. Hiking poles – mandatory!

Will sessions be canceled due to bad weather?
The only time sessions will be canceled will be in the event of a bad snow-storm, windstorm, lightening storm or earthquake. I will let you know ahead of time via email or text. In the chance that any of these develop while we are working out, we will assess and cancel if need be. Safety of all will always be the number one deciding factor!
When it is raining, and it often does in Seattle, bring your raincoat! We will still workout! Let this group be the motivation to keep you working out even when it rains!
When it rains... be sure to dress appropriately...
- Rain coat, with rain hat
- Rain resistant or waterproof pants or pants that are easy to workout in while they may be wet (I wear running tights- very similar to yoga pants, but not cotton)!
- Gloves that you don't mind getting a bit wet and possibly a bit dirty
- Water bottle, you may not feel thirsty in the rain, but you still need to hydrate!
- Hiking Poles for the trails (the trails may be slick)
- Line your day-pack with a heavy duty plastic garbage bag to keep all contents inside dry!
- Small towel to keep in your pack, in case you need it during the session. Large towel to dry yourself off with after the session and to sit on to help keep your car seat dry 🙂
- Change of socks and shoes for after the session, dry top to change into just in case!
I know rain can sometimes be a deterrent to working out in the outdoors. But remember, when you are out on your adventure sunny weather is never a sure thing and you will most likely experience some very rainy days that you will have to walk through. Rainy workouts can make great memories, stories and a wonderful sense of accomplishment! You will also find out what kind of clothes and shoes work well in the rain and which don't! This will help you to be even more prepared for your adventure!
Cheers and until we start, keep on trekking!
